July: This whole "2012 in a Flash" thing is not quite as "flashy" as I thought it would be. Turns out we did a lot of stuff in 2012. . . here is some more of it. 

July: Sieht so aus, als ob es etwas laenger dauert um unser Jahr 2012 hier festzuhalten. Wir haben doch mehr unternommen, als gedacht. ;)

Dan's family has a cabin by Echo reservoir, so every time we get the chance, we go to the lake and cabin and play around on the family toys. When we landed in Utah to start our much-needed vacation, the first thing we did was hit the lake and ride the wave-runners. Best way to spend a day on the water.

Dan's Familie hat ein Grundstueck bei Echo-see, und jedesmal wenn wir zu Besuch sind, machen wir guten Nutzen von den Waverunners. Einen Tag am See zu verbringen ist doch das Beste.

Dan loves to ride them and do jumps and spins. He always regrets it the next day when his legs won't work anymore, but he has a lot of fun while it lasts.

Dan macht immer alle moeglichen Tricks auf den Dingern und kann nie genug kriegen. Er spuert es dann aber am naechsten Tag wenn er dolle Muskelkater hat....

Dana is a little more cautious, but loves to go fast in a straight line. The day was really windy, which made the water super choppy - not great for wave runners, but we still had a great time.

Dana ist eher vorsichtig, aber sie liebt es schnell geradeaus zu heizen. Es war aber ziemlich windig an dem Tag, was nicht so gut fuer Waverunners ist, aber wir hatten trotzdem Spass.

While in Salt Lake we checked out the new shopping center downtown, The City Center. It is pretty awesome, and has a distinct European feel, with all the shops and apartments together. We would totally live there.

Waehrend wir in Salt Lake City waren, haben wir gleich das neue Einkaufszentrum in der Innenstadt besucht. Es hat ein europaeisches Flair und wir fanden es toll, mit Laeden ueber Wohnungen, Springbrunnen, Baenke, etc.

We loved all the fountains and other water features. Really adds something to the city. It is nice to see Salt Lake investing in itself.

Es gab viele verschiedene Springbrunnen und sie waren alle sehr beeindruckend.

After a few great days in Utah, we headed off on the "main course" of our vacation: the Mega-Road-Trip-Of-Insane-Awesomeness.  This was our ride; a convertible 2012 Ford Mustang GT with a V-8 engine that screamed like a tiger. It was very, very, very fun to drive. Which was good, since we did a LOT of driving.

Nach fast einer Woche in Salt Lake machten wir uns auf zu unserem "richtigen" Urlaub, unsere tolle Autofahrt entlang  der Kueste von Kalifornien. Wir Ihr seht sind wir mit Stil gefahren...einen 2012 Ford Mustang GT, mit einem kraeftigen Motor. Es hat soviel Spass gemacht in diesem Cabriolet zu fahren und das war gut, denn wir hatte eine lange Reise vor uns.

Our first stop was in Klamath Falls, Oregon. Not because we wanted to go there, but because it was on the way towards where we wanted to go. Our little hotel was across the street from a bowling alley, so we hit the lanes.

Unser erster Halt war in Klamath Falls, in Oregon. Das war nicht einer unserer wirklichen Ziele, aber nach 12 Std. Fahrt muss man ja mal Pause machen. Unser Hotel hatte kostenloses bowlen und da wir den ganzen Tag im Auto sassen, kam uns das ganz gelegen.

And for the first time ever in the history of earth, Dan beat Dana at bowling.

If the vacation ended there, it would have all been worth it. For him.

Und zum aller, allerersten Mal in der Geschichte der Welt, hat Dan mich geschlagen im Bowling. Wenn der Urlaub in dem Moment geendet haette, waere das okay gewesen, ....fuer Dan. ;)

Our first target destination was the Redwood Forest, which neither of us had ever seen. It was truly breathtaking and wonderful. It was a little chilly there in the fog belt, but we planned ahead, kept our jackets on and the rag-top down so we could really take in the beauty of the place.

Unser erstes richtige Ziel war der Redwood Forest, welchen wir beide noch nie gesehen haben. Es war wirklich atemberaubend und einmalig. Es war zwar ein bisschen neblig und kalt, aber wir hatten dafuer geplant und Jacken angezogen, da konnten wir mit dem Dach unten all diese Schoenheit bewundern.

There is something magical about a forest, especially one where the trees are as big as houses. We took a few hikes, and soaked up as much of the serenity and beauty as we could.

Der Wald ist wirklich bezaubernd, erst recht wenn die Baeume so gross wie Haeuser sind, oder sogar noch groesser. Wir haben ein paar Spaziergaenge gemacht und einfach die Ruhe und Schoenheit einsinken lassen.

It really is one of those places that you have to see before you die. Truly amazing. 

Das ist wirklich ein Ort den man gesehen haben muss bevor man stirbt. Einfach wunderschoen.

A little south of the Redwood forest, we found a little spot on the beach where we spent the night. It is actually a very long story, and kinda funny - it involves bears, a wounded pelican, almost running out of gas, and breaking the law. You will also notice that I said spend the night, not sleep. Yeah, there was not much sleep due to the discomfort/anxiety/rain/cold combo. But it was an adventure.

Ein bisschen suedlich vom Redwood Forest fanden wir einen Platz wo wir am Strand uebernachten konnten. Die Geschichte dazu ist eigentlich ziemlich lang und lustig - es hat mit Baeren, einem verwundeten Pelikan, einen fast leeren Tank und etwas Ungesetzlichem zu tun. Ich habe auch uebernachten gesagt und nicht schlafen. Schlafen war nicht moeglich bei diesen Gegebenheiten, noch dazu hat es die ganze Nacht genieselt....was fuer ein Abenteuer.

The next day we hit the forest again to see the things we missed on pass I. 

Den naechsten Tag sind wir nochmal durch den Wald gefahren um all das zu sehen, was wir am Tag zuvor verpasst haben.

This time we hit the tourist traps, one of which Dana literally climbed into,

Diesmal klapperten wir alle Touristenstellen ab, einen Baum wo ich reinkletterte,

And another of which almost literally trapped our car.

und ein anderer wo wir mit dem Auto durchfahren konnten.

From the Redwood Forest we headed south down the Pacific Coast Highway. This was the real destination of the vacation. Dan has always wanted to drive the PCH, and we figured that if we ever had a child, this would be the last time in a long time that we could hope to make that dream come true. Driving it in a suped-up convertible was, of course, the cream on top.

Vom Redwood Forest sind wir dann suedlich weitergefahren auf der Landstrasse, an der pazifischen Kueste entlang. Dan wollte schon immer diese Landstrasse fahren und wir dachten uns wenn wir einmal Kinder haben, dann wuerde es eine ganze Weile dauern, eh wir diesen Traum verwirklichen koennten. Mit dem Cabrio zu fahren war wie die Schlagsahne auf dem Eis.

Only bummer was that it was mostly chilly or barely warm for most of the drive. So we didn't get much use out of the swimsuits we packed. But the scenery was breathtaking. New vistas opened up around every twist and turn. And there are very very many twists and turns. Another reason it was super fun to have a beefy car.

Das Einzige was wir bedauert haben, war das das Wetter eher kuehl und windig war, also konnten wir unsere Badeanzuege eher weniger nutzen. Aber die Ausblicke die wir hatten waren umso schoener, nach jeder Kurve kam ein noch tollerer Anblick auf die Kueste und das Meer. Es gab soviele Kurven und es war so cool ein starkes Auto zu fahren. Hat voll Spass gemacht.

On the southern end of our drive we stopped for a few days of R&R in Napa Valley. We took a tour of a winery, which was pretty awesome, but for us a little like taking visiting a museum to someone we had never heard of. Everyone else there was really excited, but the buzz was lost on us. We learned a lot about making wine, though. Turns out you take some grapes, squish them, then take the juice and let it go bad for a long time. You then put this in a bottle and sell if for bajillions of dollars.

Unser naechster Halt war mehr im Sueden und zwar in Napa Valley. Dort blieben wir fuer ein paar Tage um die Landschaft zu erkunden und uns auszuruhen. Wir unternahmen eine Tour in einer Weinerei, was ziemlich interessant war aber bei weitem nicht so toll wie fuer die Leute die hier und da ein Glaesschen kosten konnten. Jetzt wissen wir das man den Saft aus den Weintrauben rausdrueckt und ihn fuer ein paar Jahre schlecht werden laesst, um ihn dann fuer viel Geld zu verkaufen.

One of the nice things about our visit to Napa Valley was that it was not cold or chilly. One of the bad things was that it was incredibly hot.

Eins der guten Dinge in Napa Valley war, das es nicht kalt oder windig war....dafuer war es unertraeglich heiss. :)

While there, we also found a tour that was more to our taste and liking - it was an olive-oil and vinegar tasting at an olive orchard. It was actually very cool, and we learned all sorts of cool food-geek stuff to impress our friends back home.

Waehrend wir in Napa waren haben wir noch eine Tour mitgemacht die uns besser gefallen hat. Es war eine Olivenoel und Essig Verkostungstour. Es war wirklich cool und wir haben viel ueber Oel und Essig gelernt, um jetzt alle zu beeindrucken.

I can't explain olive oil making, because it was much more complicated than wine. It still involves squeezing and bottling and bajillions of dollars, but there were a bunch of steps in between that were all like "blah blah blah buy our expensive olive oil cuz its the best in the world blah." 

Es ist schwierig zu erklaeren wie Olivenoel gemacht wird, es ist ein bisschen komplizierter als Wein. Es beinhaltet pressen und in Flaschen fuellen und viel Geld damit machen, aber wir hoerten auch viel Werbung fuer....kauft unser tolles Olivenoel, es is das Beste in der Welt....

This is not actually a picture of what you think it is. Yes, it is beautiful, but it is not posed. It is Dana hiding in the shade of an olive tree because she otherwise would have melted.

Das ist nicht wirklich ein Bild, wo Dana sich fuer ein Foto posiert hat, sie hat sich in Wirklichkeit im Schatten des Olivenbaums versteckt, weil sie sonst in der Sonne geschmolzen waere.

Across the street from those shady olive trees was this vineyard. The grapes were all hanging there, looking ripe for the picking. Given how much these grapes are worth, you would think they would be guarded. But they weren't. Nom, nom, nom!

Gegenueber von unserer Tour war dieser Weingarten. Die Weintrauben hingen dort in Massen und wenn man bedenkt wieviel Geld sie aus den Trauben machen, wuerde man denken das sie besser beschuetzt waeren, waren sie aber nicht......mmmmh, lecker.

We like to do things our own way, so on the way out, we stopped at the Welcome sign. Pretty sure it was legally. . . ambiguous. . . to get out of the car at that -precise- place, but we were ready to play the German Tourist card to the hilt. 

Wir machen einige Dinge auf unsere eigene Art und Weise, so auf unserem Weg aus Napa heraus, hielten wir an dem grossem Eingangsschild an, um ein paar Bilder zu schiessen. Es schien verboten zu sein, aber wir waren bereit deutsche Touristen zu spielen, die von nichts wussten.

Again, this is actually Dana hiding in the shade. She just looks beautiful on accident like that.

Und hier versteckt sich Dana wiedermal im Schatten, aber sie sieht einfach toll in dem Bild aus.

Our various destinations were a lot of fun. While in Napa we treated ourselves to a pamper day. Dan got a massage that left him feeling drunk for half the day, and Dana got a manicure that made her feel all "Hollywood." But in between, we really had a lot of fun just driving the car.

Auf all unseren Unternehmungen hatten wir viel Spass. Waehrend wir noch in Napa waren, haben wir es uns auch mal gutgehen lassen, Dan hat eine Massage genossen und ich habe meine Fingernaegel machen lassen. Ansonsten hatten wir wirklich viel Spass mit unserem Auto zu fahren, wie Ihr im Bild sehen koennt.

We didn't even know that we would drive close to the Jelly Belly factory, but when we saw it, we dove off the next off-ramp and checked it out. It was pretty. . . sweet.

Wir hatten keine Ahnung wir wuerden so nah an der Jelly Belly Fabrik vorbeikommen, aber wir nutzen gleich die Chance um uns alles anzuschaun und ein paar leckere Jelly Bellys zu essen.

Another one of the major target destinations was San Francisco, which we had also both never seen. This was our view driving along the piers. San Fran is really a fun city. Street performers, vibrant crowds, great food. We had a great time there.

Unser naechstes grosse Ziel war San Franzisko, wo wir beide noch nie gewesen sind. Hier koennt Ihr sehen, wie es bei unserer Einfahrt in die Stadt aussah. San Franzisko ist echt ein tolle Stadt, mit Strassenkuenstlern, Massen von Menschen und tollem Essen. Uns hat es sehr gefallen.

We were bummed to find out that if you want to visit Alcatraz, you have to book the trip like 2 years in advance. No joke. We did not know that, and showed up expecting to catch a tour same-day. No dice. Total bummer for Dana, who wanted to see Alcatraz most of all on the trip. Boo Alcatraz web-site for your lack of warnings on this one.

Wir waren so enttaeuscht als wir herausfanden das wir die Tour nach Alcatraz nicht mitmachen konnten. Wir wussten nicht, dass man das fast 2 Jahre vorher haette buchen muessen und die Webseite hat davon nichts gesagt. Dana war total enttaeuscht, denn darauf hatte sie sich am meisten gefreut!

So instead of taking a tour of Alcatraz, we kicked around the pier district, trying to see what we could see, like this pretty neat naval museum, a wacky old-school arcade museum, and a bunch of cool street performers.

So anstatt nach Alcatraz zu fahren, haben wir den Pier erkundet und fanden dieses U-Boot Museum, ein altes Spiel-Museum und ein paar wirklich talentierte Strassenkuenstler.

Dana is a trooper, and shook off her disappointment over Alcatraz pretty quick.

Dana hat ihre Enttaeuschung schnell weggesteckt, dass sie nicht nach Alcatraz konnte und hatte das Beste drauss gemacht.

We also took a walk through China Town. Even though we didn't plan on it, it turns out we took a walk through ALL of China Town. We were looking for this famous gate, and just happened to start on the completely wrong side. So it was another adventure. Go figure.

Wir sind auch durch China Town gelaufen und wie sich am Ende rausstellte, durch ganz China Town. Wir wollten dieses beruehmte Tor finden und haben natuerlich am anderen Ende der Stadt angefangen nach dem Tor zu suchen. Typisch. :)

Riding the famous trolleys was a pretty cool experience. We had to wait almost two hours for a chance to get aboard one, but once we were on it was a remarkable experience.

Mit diesen beruehmten Trolleys mitzufahren stand natuerlich auch auf unserem Plan. Obwohl wir fast 2 Stunden auf einen Trolley warten mussten, der Platz fuer uns hatte, war es doch ein einmaliges Erlebnis.

We both took a turn at the rails, which is of course the "only" super-tourist way to ride.

Wir haben uns abgwechselt uns draussen an den Stangen festzuhalten, so richtig wie ein Tourist.

San Fran is a super scenic city, but hilly as all creation. A marathon in this city would be ridiculous. I mean, much more ridiculous than any other marathon.

San Franzisko hat soviele schoene Aussichten, aber hat auch viele Berge, die man hoch und runterlaufen muss. Einen Marathon in dieser Stadt zu laufen waere Mord. Schlimmer als ein Marathon an sich schon ist.

On our way out, we stopped at the Golden Gate to take pictures and try not to freeze to death in the wind.

Auf unserem Weg aus San Franzsiko raus, mussten wir natuerlich unbedingt bei der Golden Gate Bruecke anhalten und ein paar Bilder nehmen, obwohl wir dabei fast erfroren waeren, es war so kalt!

Mark Twain once said "The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco." Yeah, I get that.

Mark Twain hat einmal gesagt "Der kaelteste Winter den ich je erlebt habe, war ein Sommer in San Franzisko." Wir haben total verstanden, was er damit meinte.

And then we were off to more adventures. . .

Und weiter gings, auf neue Abenteuer....

Our next stop was Monterey Bay, where we had planned to get in some sun-and-beach time, which was Dana's second biggest vacation wish. Too bad the temperatures only climbed to a balmy 53 degrees. So instead we went to the aquarium, which was pretty amazing. We spent hours watching the sea otters play.

Unser naechster Halt war Monterey Bay, wo wir eigentlich einen Strandtag einlegen wollten. Das war Dana's zweitgroesster Wunsch, da sie soviele schoene Bilder von dem Strand gesehen hatte. Leider sanken die Temperaturen in den Keller und aus war der Traum. Anstelle des Strandes, stand das Aquarium auf dem Plan, welches auch sehr beruehmt ist (vorallem fuer seinen Preis). Wir verbrachten bestimmt einige Stunden damit die Otter zu beobachten.

They also had fish.

Und natuerlich die huebschen Fische....

And then it was back onto the PCH for another day behind the wheel.

Dann ging es wieder auf die Landstrasse an der Kueste entlang zum naechsten Ziel.

So many cool little coves and spots we would have loved to explore. Maybe in another life we will come back and kayak some of the coast. . .

Es gab soviele Felsformationen und Hoehlen die wir gerne naeher erkundet haetten....vielleicht kommen wir nochmal irgendwann zurueck und paddeln die Kueste mit einem Kayak ab. ;)

While not as cute as sea otters, elephant seals make up for it by being loud, smelly, and violent.

Die See-elephanten waren nicht so suess wie die Otter, aber sie waren laut, stinkend and gewaltig.

We did have to go down to the beach at least once, so we could say we were in the ocean. But it was freezing.

Wir sind wenigstens einmal runter zum Strand damit wir sagen konnten, dass wir im pazifischen Ozean waren. Es war sooooo kalt!

This is as far into the ocean as Dana was able to go.

Weiter rein ins Wasser ist Dana nicht gegangen.

The sun never broke through the fog until sunset. Thanks a lot, Mr. Sun. You are fired.

Den ganzen Tag kam die Sonne nicht raus, es war nebling und kuehl. Erst fuer den Sonnenuntergang kam die Sonne raus....na prima.

The unintended theme of the vacation turned out to be vast changes in temperature. So along those lines, of course we had to drive through Death Valley. Also a first for us both.

Das ungeplante Motto fuer unseren Urlaub waren all die verschiedenen Wetterverhaeltnisse die wir erlebten. Also hat es gut gepasst, dass wir durch Death Valley gefahren sind, was fuer uns beide neu war.

Amazing that such variance in landscape exists in the same state. Whatever else you might say about it, California has a lot of beautiful places to visit.

Faszinierend das man soviele verschiedene Vegetationen in einem Staat erleben kann, abgesehen von Death Valley kann man aber nichts gegen das schoene Kalifornien sagen.

And yeah, it was hot there.

Es war so heiss....fast 45 Grad.

Dana finally got her sun and sand, but there was a noticeable lack of ocean. Or any other kind of water.

Dana bekam endlich ihre Sonne und ihren Sand, aber leider war der Ozean nicht vorhanden oder Wasser in generell.

This is Dan trying to look like he is stranded walking through the desert, a la some old-timey western movie. Cue the Indian Flute music. . .

Dan versucht wie Einer auszusehen, der schon Tage durch die Wueste geirrt ist und fast am Ende ist....wie in einem alten Western.

We like to name all our cars, and we had this one with us for so long, that we gave him the honorary name of Shadowfax.

Wir haben die Angewohnheit all unseren Autos einen Namen zu geben und da wir dieses Auto fuer solange gefahren sind, gaben wir ihm auch einen Namen - Shadowfax.

The last stop on the way home was at our great friends, the Waites. We loved catching up with them, catching a broadway show that *almost* made sense, and just hanging out. They are great peeps.

Unser letzter Halt auf unserem Weg nach Hause war bei unseren Freunden, den Waites. Wir fanden es wunderbar nach sovielen Jahren wiedereinmal zusammen zu sein. Wir hatten viel zu erzaehlen und wir schauten uns eine Vorfuehrung auf einer Freibuehne zusammen an und hatten einfach Spass fuer einen Abend. Das sind wirklich gute Freunde!

And that was it for the vacation. We put over 2000???? miles on an otherwise brand-new car, had many adventures both planned and accidental, and made a ton of memories. It was a great trip.

Und das war unser Urlaubsbericht! Wir sind ungefaehr 3500 km mit einem nagelneuen Cabrio gefahren, erlebten so einige Abenteuer, von denen einige nicht geplant waren und nahmen viele tolle Erinnerungen mit nach Hause. Wir hatten einen tollen Trip.
