How does a caterpillar turn into a moth/butterfly?
My best friend's kids are fascinated with finding caterpillars and when I visited them in Germany they told me all about how they raise them into butterflies or moths.
Since I knew there are a few different kinds right in our backyard, we decided to see if we could do it, too.
This little guy did not disappoint and we were able to watch all the stages of his metamorphosis.
After eating and just hanging out for a few days, he found a good spot and started to pupate.
The chrysalis hung there for about 3 weeks, until we were afraid that we did something wrong.
But a few days later this beautiful butterfly emerged, all shimmery and orange.
It flapped his wings for a long time (perfect to take pics) and then took of flying through the neighborhood.
It is such an exciting process and we did it about 4 different times and only had one not turn out right (see 2nd pic). I think we are hooked and will do it this next summer again. it is so much fun.

That's so cool! I've only ever seen that with the kits teachers can buy to use in school.
That is a fun new hobby. What do you do to take care of them? And what are you putting them in? It looks like a vase, but I know it would need a top on it.
