Christmas 2009

This year we left our snowy, cold home and headed south to warmer climes for Christmas. Dana's brother Kai moved to Arizona a few months ago with his wife Annett and their kids Vicki and Kenneth, so we took advantage of their relative closeness to spend the holiday together.

We spent 4 wonderful days with them, and had a great time. We got out to do some sight-seeing around the Phoenix area, and enjoy the balmy weather. When we were there the temperatures were in the 50s, while at home in Colorado they were somewhere in the low teens, if not single-digits. In Arizona, Santa wears a red t-shirt and drives a Harley.

It was wonderful to celebrate Christmas with some of our German family. We had great German food, and observed the traditional Christmas Eve celebrations. (In Germany, the major gift opening/Santa bringing gifts happens on Christmas Eve.) It was also great to spend time with the family, since we don't get to see them too often. Vicki and Kenneth have grown so much since we saw them last that we had to get to know them all over again.

When we were not out exploring Phoenix, we played games inside. Guitar Hero was the favorite, and the whole family rocked out together. We also played some classic board games, and table tennis, which is a Berthold family staple. It is always hilarious to watch Kai compete against Dana, since he always uses psychological tricks to get inside her head and mess with her. Dana, of course, being so competitive, hates to lose so the more he messes with her the harder she tries to win. It makes for a great show to watch, no matter who wins.

The four days went by far too fast, but we had a wonderful time, and it was especially great to reconnect with Kai, Annett, Vicki and Kenneth.
