Visit from our Schweizer

Those of you who knew us when we lived at the U will probably remember our friend Christian. He and Dana grew up together, and he came to visit us several times in the old Shoreline apartment. Well, I guess we must be doing something right, because he came to visit us again, this time with his new bride, Sarah, who is from Switzerland.

They were our first official guests in our new house. We owe it to them that we actually got the guest room finished, because it would have just sat the way it was until someone came to use it.

We had a great time with them. Unfortunately, they could only stay here for a little under a week, but at least we were able to do some memorable things together, and we had a lot of fun.

Fortunately for Dana and I, both Sarah and Christian like video games, so we instantly had something to do together. Here you see us playing Guitar Hero, which brings out the true rocker in anyone. It turns out that Dana has some pretty impressive Guitar Hero skills. Who knew?
Sarah was a great sport, and really easy to be around. Christian found himself a good one. She's not bad at Guitar Hero, either. (But no one can rock the fake guitar like Dan)

When we weren't playing video games, we were deep in the beautiful country around Denver. We took a trip over the weekend into Rocky Mountain National Park, where we camped for two nights at Hermit Park. Everyone had a great time, and it stayed warm enough that Dana could even sleep a little and didn't complain (too much).

Dan made his world-famous Chicken Delight in his dutch oven. Here we all are eating from the same pot, because it was too dark to see the plates we were going to eat from. The food was yu-u-u-mmy! Unfortunately, the recipe makes so much food that we had to dump a bunch into the fire. Dan almost cried, but he swore he just had smoke in his eyes.
While we were in the park, we took a hike up to Mills Lake, which was awesome. The hike was good - not too hard, and with gorgeous scenery and a goal at the end to let you know all the effort was worth something. Mills Lake was pristine, and the mountains surrounding it were just stunning. The lake lies just about 100 feet below the timber line, which was really cool to see. You will notice that Dan is wet in this picture. That is because Dana bet him $10 that he wouldn't jump in the 40 degree water. Well, Dana is now wiser, and Dan is now richer.
It was great to have some time to get to know Sarah, whom we had never met before. It took us 3 minutes to like her, and things just kept getting better over the weekend. She is good people. We kept trying to get her to talk in Swiss German (it is completely different than High German) but she was too shy. To get an idea of what Swiss German sounds like, imagine Caribbean Creole, or a thick Jamaican accent, and you get an idea. We finally figured out how to get her to speak it - make her pray! Man, it sounds cool!
While they were here we took advantage of the opportunity to take in a Rockies game at Coors Field. That was pretty cool. For all four of us it was the first major league baseball game we had ever attended. We got seats in the Rock Pile, which are $4 a piece, way high up in center field. It was a good time. The Rockies played the Giants, but the game was a snoozer. 1-0 off a sac-fly in the bottom of the 9th. Some people call that a suspenseful game. All of those people work for the Rockies. At least we won.
Coors Field is really cool. The purple line of seats are the marker for 1 mile above sea level, and you get this really great view of downtown Denver from where we were sitting. Not too shabby for 4 bucks, dontcha think?
We stayed until the whole stadium was empty. It was a great time. Dan spent most of the game explaining the rules of baseball to two of the three Europeans. You think baseball is a simple game, but try to explain the in-field home run rule, or the logic of a sacrifice fly to someone who is still confused about the difference between a strike and a ball. Not easy, my friend.

It was so great having them over. We only wish we would have been able to take more time with them. They stopped by as just one leg of a very long American tour -  the kind that only Europeans can take, since they get a month of vacation every year. At any rate, we were thrilled to have them over. We only hope that more of our friends can come to visit us. (hint, hint)
