So this post is almost a month over-due, but a lot has happened in that month. We weren't sure if we should make 5 individual posts to cover everything exactly, or lump them all together into one. But then we figured that one concentrated, intense and graphically aesthetic post would do the job. So, without further ado: enjoy the slide show!
Dana's parents, Frank and Rosi, came to visit us for the first time at our home in Colorado. It was so great to have them here, since we don't get to see them very often. They stayed with us for three weeks, and we had a great time together. As you can see from the slides, we did a lot of stuff. The major event was our road trip to Nauvoo and Chicago. We spent a week in Nauvoo, and two days in Chicago, where Dan's brother and sister-in-law Jesse and Wendy live. The time in Nauvoo was fantastic, seeing all the places that we had only heard about in the Pioneer stories. The photo of us standing on a road next to the Mississippi River is actualy on Parley Street, where the Saints lined up to cross the river and leave Nauvoo behind. It is an incredibly spiritual, moving place. Of course, we also did the other Nauvoo things, like the hand-cart trek among cattle, going to the Nauvoo Temple, and all the other touristy things.
From Nauvoo we went to Chicago to visit Jesse and Wendy, and also to take in the sights. What a beautiful city Chicago is! For all of us, it was our first time there, and we were all very impressed. We took in a river-tour, went to the top of the Sears Tower (no, we will not call it the Willis tower, no matter who bought it), and in general had a great time discovering the Second City. Jesse and Wendy were incredibly gracious hosts and tour-guides, and we had a fantastic time there.
After we got back to Colorado, we puttered around the Denver area. We took Frank and Rosi to a Rockies game, sat in the Rock Pile, and explained the American Pass-Time to them. You never truly appreciate how complicated baseball is until you try to explain it to someone who has never watched a game. But by the time we left, Frank at least felt like he had some understanding of the sport, and could follow along.
We also took a day to drive through Rocky Mountain National Park, which is, of course, breathtakingly beautiful. Other than that, we sat around on our patio, talking, laughing and enjoying each other's company. No vacation with the Bertholds is complete without revisiting the half-dozen old Communist family games involving matches, and a board game or five.
It was a great vacation for us, and for them, and the time for them to fly back home came far too quickly. We are so glad that they made it out to visit us, and they were even here to celebrate Dan's 31st birthday with us.
